About the event

The relationship between parents and child welfare agencies often involves a power imbalance. However, it can be challenging for parents to access and comprehend simplified information about child welfare legislation and the policies and procedures of child and family services (CFS). Our goal is to bridge this information gap and empower parents through our system navigation sessions and toolkits. Here are some of the topics covered:

  • Understanding the Importance of a Fully Informed Circle of Support
  • Effective Communication Strategies with Your Caseworker
  • Court Support and Legal Aid: Navigating the Legal System with Assistance and Advocacy
  • Administrative Review Process: A Comprehensive Guide to Filing a Successful Appeal
  • What's Next: A Guide for Individuals Contacted by Children's Services

Our system navigation sessions provide structured group education sessions designed to enhance your understanding of CFS policies and processes. These sessions are conducted in a similar format to our support circles, where you will receive valuable information, strategies, and support to navigate the system. Our aim is to equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to advocate effectively for yourself and your children.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis, and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. We acknowledge all Nations – Indigenous and non – who live, work and play on this land, and who honour and celebrate this territory. Finally, we remain committed to continue to learn about the truth regarding Colonialism and residential schools in Canada, and will actively work towards reconciliation while advocating for our government to do so as well.
